I've been in cybersecurity for 19 years. Army Special Forces. Deployed. Classified environments. I've seen tools come and go โ and I've learned to spot the difference between hype and capability. AI in cybersecurity is real, it's useful, and it will absolutely burn you if you use it wrong. Here's how to use it right.
Let's be clear about something upfront: AI is a force multiplier in security, not a replacement for human expertise. The professionals who will win the next decade aren't the ones who know the most about AI โ they're the ones who know when to use it, and when to put it down.
I've tested most of the major AI tools in actual security workflows. Not red team simulations on sanitized environments. Real threat intel pipelines, real incident response, real adversary emulation. What follows is what I've actually learned โ good, bad, and ugly.
Threat intelligence is one of the highest-value use cases for AI in security, and it's one of the least glamorous. Most threat intel work is grinding: reading through advisories, ingesting indicators, correlating TTPs with your environment, writing reports no one reads. AI crushes this.
Feed AI a raw CVE advisory or a threat actor report and ask it to extract: affected products, CVSS score, exploitation likelihood, detection opportunities, and recommended mitigations โ structured for your team's format. What took 30 minutes takes 3.
You can also use AI to build TTP mapping. Paste a threat report and ask it to map every mentioned technique to MITRE ATT&CK framework categories. Output as a table. What used to take hours now takes minutes, and you can run it on 20 reports instead of 2.
AI also shines for synthesizing open-source intelligence. Give it a domain, IP address, or threat actor name and ask it to summarize what's publicly known โ it can pull context from its training data faster than any analyst Googling manually. Just verify the outputs (more on that below).
When an incident hits, time is everything. Cognitive load is high. People make bad decisions under pressure. AI can serve as a second brain โ not the decision-maker, but the analyst who never gets flustered.
Log triage: Paste a chunk of suspicious logs and ask AI to identify anomalies, flag potential indicators of compromise, and prioritize what needs human investigation. It won't catch everything โ but it will cut through the noise and surface what matters fastest.
Playbook generation: Describe an incident scenario and ask AI to draft an initial response playbook. It won't replace your runbooks, but it's a solid starting point โ especially when you're dealing with something novel and your existing playbooks don't quite fit.
Communication drafting: One of the most underrated uses. Ask AI to draft the executive notification email for an ongoing incident. Feed it the technical details, tell it the audience is the CISO and board, ask for a one-page summary with timeline, current status, business impact, and next steps. It does this well.
This is where it gets sensitive โ and where most practitioners either oversell what AI can do or pretend it can't do anything at all. The truth is in the middle.
AI is useful for red team work in specific, bounded ways. It's a good thinking partner for attack chain development. It helps you think through adversary perspective and identify gaps in blue team coverage. It can help you write more realistic phishing lures, generate scenario narratives, and map attack paths.
Attack chain reasoning: "Given this environment (Windows AD, cloud-hybrid, no EDR on legacy systems), walk me through a realistic initial access and lateral movement path that a sophisticated threat actor might use, based on TTPs from groups like APT29." This kind of adversary emulation thinking is exactly what red teams need โ and AI can cover a lot of ground quickly.
Phishing scenario development: AI can help craft realistic, contextually appropriate social engineering scenarios for authorized phishing simulations. Give it the target profile, the pretext, and the organizational context. The output is a starting point โ your operators will still refine it.
Defensive gap analysis: Turn the adversary lens inward. "Based on these controls and this environment, where would an attacker find the easiest path?" This is threat modeling, and AI accelerates it significantly.
There are things AI tools will refuse to help with โ and things that require explicit authorization regardless of what a tool says. Using AI to generate functional malware, bypass specific production security controls, or conduct unauthorized testing isn't "red teaming." It's criminal activity in most jurisdictions.
I'm not being preachy. I'm being practical. If you don't have a signed rules of engagement document, you don't have authorization. AI doesn't change that calculus.
Here's where most "AI for cybersecurity" posts go quiet. I'm not going to do that. These risks are real, and I've seen experienced practitioners make every one of these mistakes.
This is the big one. When you paste incident data, customer logs, vulnerability scan results, or classified information into a commercial AI tool, you are potentially feeding that data to a third-party's training pipeline. Most enterprise agreements have carve-outs, but consumer products often don't.
Rules I follow:
AI confidently makes things up. In a creative writing context, that's manageable. In a security context, a hallucinated CVE number, a fake MITRE technique, or incorrect remediation guidance can send your team chasing ghosts โ or worse, implementing bad controls.
My rule: Never ship AI output on security matters without verification. Use AI to get to a draft fast; use human expertise to verify before it goes anywhere consequential. Treat every AI-generated security claim like you would an anonymous tip: investigate before you act on it.
This one's slow and quiet, but it's real. When analysts start relying on AI for the grunt work of security, they stop building the intuition that comes from doing that grunt work. In 5 years, you're going to have analysts who can prompt AI brilliantly but can't read a packet capture or reason through an attack chain without assistance.
Use AI to handle volume. Use humans to build judgment. Keep your people in the loop on everything, not just the escalations. Skills you don't practice atrophy โ in every field, in every generation of technology. Security is not exempt.
